The Sleep is a segment in the movie Ten Years Taiwan (1h48m), which is composed of five short films directed by five local new-generation directors, focusing on the prospected future of Taiwan through their young eyes.
The Sleep directed by Lau is a short film of Black Mirror-style, showing the imagination of people in the future buying sleep services to seek peace beyond reality. The story portrays a woman who repeatedly uses a sleep machine to get rid of the pain of insomnia, but loses her memories in the process, which is a metaphor for the contradictory international status of Taiwan, as well as the confusing cultural identity.
